What is a Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 router?
A tri band Wi-Fi 7 router utilizes the latest IEEE 802.11be wireless standard to broadcast across three separate frequency networks. Most commonly, this setup includes one 2.4 GHz band, one 5 GHz band, and one 6 GHz band.
The defining feature of tri band Wi-Fi 7 is a new technology called Multi-Link Operation or MLO. In previous Wi-Fi generations, client devices like smartphones and laptops could only connect to a single band at a time. With MLO, compatible devices can simultaneously connect, send, and receive data across multiple frequency bands to form a single connection.
By aggregating these frequencies, a tri band Wi-Fi 7 system offers several key benefits:
- Massive Speed Increases: By pooling the bands together, Wi-Fi 7 can deliver blazing theoretical data rates ranging from 40 Gbps to 46 Gbps.
- Ultra Wide Channels: Wi-Fi 7 supports massive 320 MHz channels, which double the capacity of previous generations to handle extreme data loads.
- Lower Latency and High Reliability: The ability to dynamically shift data across three bands prevents bottlenecks and reduces wait times. This makes the technology highly optimized for demanding applications like augmented reality, virtual reality, cloud computing, and competitive online gaming.
While Wi-Fi 7 is completely backward compatible with older devices, you will need modern Wi-Fi 7 compatible phones and computers to take full advantage of the 6 GHz spectrum and the MLO features
