How to check if the CCTV is recording audio?

You can tell if a CCTV camera is recording audio by checking for a tiny microphone hole on the camera housing or by reviewing the audio settings in the connected NVR, DVR or mobile app.

Physical Inspection

  • Look for a pinhole: Inspect the front face of the camera near the lens. A tiny, faint dot or hole usually indicates a built-in microphone. Completely solid housings typically lack audio capability.
  • Check for external wires: Traditional wired analog setups may feature a separate audio cable or an RCA/3.5mm jack connected to an external microphone.
  • Review specifications: Look up the exact make and model number on the manufacturer's spec sheet to confirm if an internal mic was included or supported.
Software and App Checks
  • Check live view or playback: Open the system's management software or mobile app. Expanding a single camera feed to full screen often reveals an active speaker or unmuted audio icon if sound is enabled.
  • Inspect encoder settings: In the NVR or DVR main menu under camera management or encode settings, check if audio encoding is turned on for both the main stream and substream channels
