Local storage vs cloud storage for CCTV: which is better for India?

For most Indian homes and small businesses, local storage (an NVR or DVR with a hard drive) is the better default. It works without a stable internet connection, has no recurring monthly cost, and stores weeks of footage on a one-time hardware purchase.

Cloud storage makes more sense in specific situations, not as a general replacement.

Local storage's main strength is reliability. Once your NVR and hard drive are set up, recording continues regardless of your internet connection, which matters given how often broadband drops in many parts of India.

The one-time cost of a surveillance-grade hard drive (like WD Purple) is usually far cheaper over 2-3 years than an equivalent cloud subscription, especially once you're running more than 4-6 cameras.

Cloud storage's advantage is that footage survives if the physical location is compromised. If someone steals or damages your NVR during a break-in, your recorded evidence goes with it unless it was also backed up to the cloud. Cloud also simplifies remote access across multiple locations, since you're not depending on each site's own internet connection staying up to view live or recorded footage.

The practical downside of cloud in India is cost and bandwidth.

Continuous cloud recording for even a handful of cameras needs sustained upload bandwidth that many home and small business broadband plans don't reliably provide, and the subscription cost adds up fast compared to a one-time hard drive purchase.

The setup we'd recommend for most systems: local storage as the primary recording method, with either motion-triggered cloud backup (which only uploads clips, not continuous footage) or scheduled cloud backup of the last few days as a safety net. This gets you the reliability of local storage with a fallback if the hardware itself is compromised, without paying for full continuous cloud recording.

Choose pure cloud only if you're managing multiple locations remotely and value not having to physically visit each site to retrieve footage, or if your business specifically needs footage to survive on-site theft or fire for insurance or legal reasons.
