Dongle vs Broadband: Which is better?
The main difference between a dongle and broadband is that a mobile dongle typically uses a cellular network for internet access, while fixed broadband uses a fixed connection such as fibre, DSL, Ethernet or cable.
TRAI's January 2026 broadband data separately identifies fixed wired access, fixed wireless access and mobile wireless access, with mobile wireless including handset- and dongle-based services.
A USB dongle can be useful when portability matters. It can connect a compatible computer to a mobile network without requiring a fixed broadband connection.
Fixed broadband is designed for a permanent location. Fibre connections, for example, bring the broadband service directly to the premises and can then be distributed through a router over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
The two options therefore solve different problems.
A dongle can be useful for travel, temporary accommodation, backup connectivity or locations where fixed broadband is unavailable. Its actual performance depends on mobile coverage, network congestion, signal conditions and the capabilities of the dongle.
For a home with several connected devices, fixed broadband is usually more practical because the connection can be shared through a router.
A mobile connection can also be used as a backup for fixed broadband. Some routers support USB or cellular failover, allowing another internet connection to take over when the primary connection fails.
For work from home, reliability is often more important than maximum advertised download speed. A fast mobile connection can still be inconvenient if cellular coverage fluctuates.
The best choice therefore depends on how you use the internet.
Choose fixed broadband for a permanent home connection, while a dongle is better when portability, temporary connectivity, or backup internet is the priority.
