Why replace your ISP router in the first place?

ISP-provided routers in India are typically locked-down devices with limited firmware controls, restricted admin access, and hardware that prioritises cost over performance. Most Jio and Airtel routers use 100 Mbps WAN ports or weak Wi-Fi radios that bottleneck your plan speed. You cannot change DNS settings, set up port forwarding reliably, or manage QoS on most of them. The XX530v gives you full admin control, Wi-Fi 6 with AX3000 speeds (2,402 Mbps on 5 GHz, 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz), WPA3 security, EasyMesh support, VPN server, and gigabit Ethernet ports. It also eliminates one device from your setup entirely since the ISP's ONT and router become a single unit.

What you need from each ISP to set up the XX530v

Airtel Xstream Fibre: You need the GPON serial number from your current Airtel router (found on the admin page at 192.168.1.1), the PPPoE username (your DSL number, formatted as 0XXXXXXXXXX_wifi), and the PPPoE password (your account number, found in the Airtel Thanks app under the Xstream section or on your e-bill PDF). Enter the GPON serial number in the XX530v's GPON settings, leave the GPON password blank, and create a PPPoE WAN profile with VLAN ID 100. Some Airtel connections use ALCL (Nokia) OLTs where VLAN 100 does not work. In that case, you need to find the actual VLAN ID. The XX530v does not have a built-in VLAN scanner, so you may need to check with your local Airtel technician or use a workaround to identify it. Earlier firmware versions had ALCL OLT compatibility issues, but these have been resolved in recent updates.

Jio Fiber: Jio does not openly share the GPON serial number of their routers. It is not printed on the device or box. You need to extract it by accessing the Jio router's admin interface or serial console, which requires some technical effort. Once you have the serial number (converted to 16-digit hex format), enter it in the XX530v's GPON settings with the PLOAM password left blank. Set the VLAN ID (typically 1015 for Jio, though this varies). Jio Fiber replacement is doable but is the most involved process among all the ISPs listed here. BSNL FTTH: BSNL uses MAC address binding. Before the XX530v will connect, a BSNL technician needs to register the router's MAC address on their OLT. Contact BSNL support or your local exchange to request this. Once the MAC is registered, enter your PPPoE username and password (provided during your BSNL FTTH installation) in the XX530v's WAN settings. This is the simplest setup once the MAC registration is done.

Railtel: Use a green SC/APC-type fiber patch cord (not the blue UPC type). After connecting, verify the RX laser power in the XX530v's PON status page. It should read between -15 to -25 dBm for a stable link. If the reading is outside this range, the patch cord or fiber termination may need attention.

ACT Fibernet, Excitel, and local FTTH providers: These ISPs generally use straightforward GPON authentication. Enter the GPON serial number from your current ONT and configure the WAN profile (usually PPPoE or DHCP, depending on the provider). Most local ISPs are cooperative about unbinding the old ONT's MAC and registering the XX530v. If your ISP refuses to unbind, the XX530v supports MAC cloning as a fallback, but read the known issue section below before using it.

The 50 Mbps speed cap: a known issue and how to fix it

Multiple users on Indian broadband forums and TP-Link's community forums have reported download speeds capped at roughly 50 Mbps while upload speeds run at full plan speed after replacing their ISP router with the XX530v. The cause is the MAC Clone feature. When MAC cloning is enabled (where the XX530v uses the old ISP router's MAC address instead of its own), download speeds get throttled. This has been confirmed across multiple ISPs and is a firmware-level issue, not ISP-side throttling.

The fix: go to Advanced, then GPON WAN, edit your WAN interface, scroll to the bottom, and set MAC Clone to "Do not clone MAC Address." The XX530v will then use its own MAC address, and download speeds should return to full plan speed. If your ISP requires MAC binding and you were using MAC clone as a workaround, contact your ISP to register the XX530v's own MAC address instead. TP-Link has released a beta firmware that addresses this bug, but the cleanest solution is to avoid MAC cloning entirely and get your ISP to register the new MAC.

What you lose by replacing your ISP router

Some ISP-specific features stop working when you remove the ISP router. Jio's set-top box integration with the JioFiber router will not carry over. Airtel's built-in Xstream app integration and landline (if you use VoIP through Airtel's own interface) may need reconfiguration on the XX530v's SIP/VoIP settings, which requires the SIP credentials from Airtel. ISP-managed firmware updates stop, meaning you manage firmware yourself through the Aginet app or web interface. For most users, the trade-off is worth it. You lose ISP hand-holding and gain full control over your network.
