What is HDD in CCTV?

HDD in a CCTV system stands for hard disk drive, the central storage component that saves all your video footage. While your cameras capture the action, the HDD, installed inside the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) or NVR (Network Video Recorder), records and stores that data so you can review it later.

Standard computer hard drives are not built for this job. CCTV systems need surveillance-grade HDDs designed for two demands a desktop drive never faces:

24/7 continuous writing: A normal PC drive writes data in short bursts and sits idle most of the day. A surveillance drive runs non-stop, writing for 90% or more of its operating time, without overheating or wearing out.

Multi-camera streams: Surveillance drives are firmware-tuned to write several high-definition video streams at once, minimizing dropped frames or corrupted recordings, something a desktop drive's firmware isn't optimized to handle.

The spec that actually separates the two is workload rating, measured in TB per year. A typical desktop HDD is rated for around 55-180TB/yr, meaning that's how much data it's built to write before wear becomes a reliability risk. Surveillance drives like WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk are rated well above that, some models up to 360TB/yr, because constant sequential writing is exactly what they're built for. This number is printed on the datasheet and is the one figure worth checking before you buy, rather than relying on general marketing claims.

If you install a standard desktop HDD in a DVR or NVR instead, it will usually still work at first. The failure shows up over time: bad sectors accumulate faster under constant writing, the drive can overheat inside an enclosed DVR box with no airflow designed for continuous operation, and you start seeing dropped frames or recording gaps months before a surveillance-rated drive would show the same wear.

For most home and small business setups in India, WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk are the two names to look for. Both are purpose-built surveillance drives, both are widely stocked, and both list their workload rating clearly on the box and datasheet. SSDs are also technically usable in a DVR/NVR, but at a much higher cost per TB, they're rarely the practical choice for continuous 24/7 CCTV recording. Surveillance HDDs stay the standard for a reason: high capacity at a low cost per TB, built specifically for this workload.

Choosing a surveillance-rated HDD with an adequate workload rating for your camera count and resolution ensures your system records reliably around the clock without unexpected drive failures.
