What GHz Is a Tri-Band Router? Tri-Band Wi-Fi Frequencies Explained

Tri-band Wi-Fi routers operate on specific GHz frequency bands depending on their generation and Wi-Fi standard. There are two primary configurations for the frequencies used in tri-band routers:

Traditional Tri-Band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 5 GHz) In standard models, such as Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 routers, a tri-band system broadcasts one 2.4 GHz band and two separate 5 GHz bands. Instead of introducing a completely new frequency, these routers split the available 5 GHz spectrum into two distinct portions:

        • The 2.4 GHz band provides longer range but slower speeds, which is ideal for basic web browsing and smart home IoT devices located far from the router.
        • The first 5 GHz band (5 GHz-1) uses the lower channels of the 5 GHz spectrum.
        • The second 5 GHz band (5 GHz-2) utilizes the upper channels of the 5 GHz spectrum.

By splitting the 5 GHz frequency, the router effectively creates two independent high-speed pathways, doubling the bandwidth available on the 5 GHz frequency to reduce congestion when many devices are connected.

Newer Tri-Band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 6 GHz) With the introduction of the Wi-Fi 6E standard, the tri-band configuration evolved to include a brand new frequency. These modern routers use one 2.4 GHz band, one 5 GHz band, and one 6 GHz band.

        • The 6 GHz band is a massive, newly opened spectrum that offers up to 1,200 MHz of space, meaning it has far more bandwidth with virtually no interference from older legacy devices.
        • This configuration is designed for power users and cutting-edge devices, delivering ultra-fast throughput and extremely low latency. However, the 6 GHz band has a shorter range and requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 client devices to connect.

Both setups are designed to slice the network traffic queue and allow more data to flow simultaneously, but the specific GHz frequencies you get will depend on whether you buy a traditional Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 model, or a newer Wi-Fi 6E model
