How to connect a TP-Link Extender to a Wi-Fi Router?

There are three official methods to connect a TP-Link extender to a wifi router, and the Tether app is the easiest for most people.

Method 1: TP-Link Tether app (recommended)

Plug the extender into a power outlet close to your router and wait for the Power LED to turn solid. Download the TP-Link Tether app (App Store or Google Play), then connect your phone's wifi to the extender's default network (shown as "TP-Link_Extender" or similar). Open Tether, select the extender from the local device list, choose your home wifi network, and enter your router's wifi password. Once setup completes, you can relocate the extender.

Method 2: WPS button

If your router has a WPS button, this is the fastest option, though less reliable on some ISP-provided routers or WPA3-only networks. Press the WPS button on your router, then press the WPS button on the extender within 2 minutes. Wait for the extender's signal LED to turn solid, which confirms the connection worked. If you have a dual-band router and only one band connects, repeat the process to pair the second band.

Method 3: Web browser

Connect your computer or phone to the extender's default wifi network, then open a browser and go to tplinkrepeater.net (or the extender's default IP, usually 192.168.0.254). Log in, and follow the Quick Setup Wizard to select your router's network and enter its password.

After setup: the extended network usually shares your router's SSID and password by default (or gets "_EXT" added), unless you customize it. Move the extender to roughly halfway between your router and the weak-signal area, and wait for the signal LED to confirm a strong connection before finalizing placement.

If WPS fails twice, switch to Tether or browser setup instead of retrying repeatedly.
