ASUS RT-BE92U vs TP-Link Archer BE550: subscription-free security or TP-Link’s ecosystem?

The ASUS RT-BE92U includes a 10G port and subscription-free AiProtection security powered by Trend Micro. The Archer BE550 offers all 2.5G ports and EasyMesh mesh expansion. Both are tri-band Wi-Fi 7 routers in the BE9700/BE9300 class. If network security without recurring fees matters most, the ASUS wins. If mesh expansion and a lower price matter more, the BE550 is the pick.

The RT-BE92U runs Wi-Fi 7 on all three bands, including 2.4 GHz, and achieves 9,700 Mbps combined. The BE550 runs Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz and totals around 9,200 Mbps. In real-world use, Dong Knows Tech's review found the two share similar 5 GHz and 6 GHz wireless specs (2x2 on each band), so throughput differences are marginal. The 2.4 GHz gap is negligible because of the band's 40 MHz channel width ceiling.

On ports, the RT-BE92U has one 10G WAN/LAN port and four 2.5G LAN ports, per ASUS's spec sheet. The BE550 has one 2.5G WAN and four 2.5G LAN ports. The ASUS is better equipped for multi-gig NAS or ISP plans above 2.5 Gbps thanks to that 10G port. Port count is the same at five total on both.

Software is the real split. ASUS bundles AiProtection (network-wide threat detection) and Adaptive QoS at no subscription cost. TP-Link's equivalent HomeShield features require a paid subscription beyond the basic tier. The ASUS also supports AiMesh with wired backhaul, while TP-Link's EasyMesh is simpler but does not support wired backhaul in the same way.

Best for: The RT-BE92U suits buyers who want 10G wired headroom and built-in security without subscriptions. The BE550 suits TP-Link ecosystem users and those who value EasyMesh expansion at a lower entry cost.

Not for: The RT-BE92U if you want a compact, antenna-free design. The BE550 if subscription-free security is a priority.
