5G modem vs 5G router: what’s the difference?
A 5G modem connects to the cellular network. A 5G router distributes that connection to your devices over Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Most consumer "5G routers" sold in India, including every SIM router in our catalog, have both built in. You only need to think about this distinction if you're building a custom network setup.
What a modem actually does
The modem is the component inside the device that talks to the cell tower. It handles the 5G/4G radio frequencies, negotiates with your carrier's network, and converts cellular data into standard internet traffic. The Qualcomm SDX65 chipset used in routers like the MikroTik Chateau 5G R17 ax is a modem; it's what makes the 5G connection happen.
A standalone 5G modem (sometimes called a 5G gateway or CPE module) does only this. It has an Ethernet port out, and that's it. No Wi-Fi, no multiple ports, no device management. You connect it to a separate Wi-Fi router.
What the router part adds
The router handles everything after the internet signal enters the device: creating a Wi-Fi network, assigning IP addresses to connected devices, firewall, port forwarding, Quality of Service (traffic prioritization), and managing wired Ethernet connections.
When does the distinction matter?
In most cases, it doesn't. A combined SIM router like the TP-Link MR200 or MikroTik Chateau 5G R17 ax handles both jobs in one box. Insert SIM, get Wi-Fi. Done.
The distinction matters in two scenarios:
You already have a high-end Wi-Fi system. If you've invested in a mesh Wi-Fi setup, say, TP-Link Deco units or a UniFi system, you might want a 5G modem feeding into your existing router rather than replacing it. Some SIM routers offer "bridge mode" for exactly this: the router disables its own Wi-Fi and acts as a pure modem, passing the cellular connection to your existing network via Ethernet.
Enterprise or industrial deployments. Standalone modems are used in IoT gateways, vehicles, and industrial systems where the networking layer is handled by separate equipment.
For home and small office use in India, a combined 5G SIM router is the right buy. Nobody needs to purchase a modem and router separately unless their network design specifically requires it.
