Yes, most TP-Link routers need a modem or an internet source unless they have a built-in modem or fiber ONT.

A router and a modem perform different jobs. The modem connects to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), while the router shares that internet connection with your devices over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

If you buy a standard TP-Link wireless router, you will usually connect it to:
