GL.iNet Flint 3 vs Archer BE550: OpenWrt flexibility or TP-Link simplicity?

The GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) is the better pick if you need built-in VPN routing, ad blocking, or OpenWrt-level control. The Archer BE550 is easier to set up and has a more polished app experience with TP-Link's Tether and HomeShield. Both are tri-band BE9300 class Wi-Fi 7 routers with five 2.5G Ethernet ports.

On paper, the specs are nearly identical. Both run tri-band Wi-Fi 7, both have 2x2 radios on each band, and both top out around 9,200 Mbps of combined theoretical bandwidth. The Flint 3 uses a Qualcomm IPQ5332 SoC clocked at 1.5 GHz with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB eMMC, while the BE550 V1 runs Qualcomm's Network Pro 620 at 2.2 GHz with 1 GB RAM. The BE550 V1 has the faster CPU on paper, though both handle typical home networking loads without issues.

The real split is software. The Flint 3 runs OpenWrt under GL.iNet's admin panel. That means you get WireGuard VPN at up to 680 Mbps (per GL.iNet's spec), OpenVPN, AdGuard Home, failover, tethering support, and LuCI access for granular firewall and routing rules. The BE550 runs TP-Link's proprietary firmware with a web UI and the Tether app. It offers VPN client/server support and EasyMesh for mesh expansion, but no ad blocking and no SSH or command-line access.

The Flint 3 has four external fold-down antennas versus the BE550's six internal ones. Coverage varies by environment, but the BE550's internal antenna design blends better into Indian living rooms.

Best for: The Flint 3 suits tinkerers, VPN-heavy users, and small office setups where OpenWrt flexibility matters. The BE550 suits buyers who want app-managed setup, EasyMesh expansion, and TP-Link's ecosystem.

Not for: Skip the Flint 3 if you want a plug-and-play experience. Skip the BE550 if you need router-level ad blocking or WireGuard throughput above 500 Mbps.
