How to setup a 5G Router in India?
To setup and a 5G SIM Router, Insert your SIM card, power on the router, connect to the default Wi-Fi, and run through the browser-based setup. Most SIM routers are online within 15 minutes. The real work is placement and signal optimization after that.
Here's the full process, plus what we've learned from helping customers get the most out of their setups.
Step 1: Insert the SIM and power on
Use a standard nano-SIM from Jio, Airtel, or Vi. No special data plan is required to get started; your regular mobile plan will work. Slide the SIM into the slot (usually on the bottom or side of the router), connect the power adapter, and wait for the power LED to go solid. Most routers boot in under 60 seconds.
One thing we see customers miss in our support calls: make sure mobile data is active on the SIM before inserting it. If it's a fresh SIM, activate it on a phone first.
Step 2: Connect to the router's Wi-Fi
Look at the sticker on the bottom of your router. It will list the default Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password. Connect your phone or laptop to that network.
TP-Link routers like the MR200 and MR600 also support the Tether app for setup. MikroTik devices use a web interface at 192.168.88.1Â more powerful but has a learning curve.
Step 3: Run through the setup wizard
Open a browser and go to the address printed on the router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). The wizard will ask you to:
- Set a new admin password (Always do this as the default credentials are a security risk)
- Confirm your SIM card and APN settings (most routers auto-detect Indian carriers)
- Set your Wi-Fi name and password
- Choose your network mode; pick "4G/5G Auto" so the router selects the fastest available network
If the APN doesn't auto-detect, use: jionet for Jio, airtelgprs.com for Airtel, or vi internet for Vi.
Step 4: Optimize placement
This is a critical step as the Cellular signal depends on where your router sits.
Place it near a window or external wall facing the nearest cell tower. Elevate it, if possible. A shelf at 1.5 metres works better than a desk tucked in a corner. Keep it away from thick concrete walls, metal objects, and other electronics that cause interference.
Check the signal indicator on the router's web interface. You're looking for RSRP values; anything above -90 dBm is good. Below -110 dBm means the router is struggling to hold a connection.
Step 5: Test and fine-tune
Run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net. Test at different times; cellular speeds drop during peak hours (roughly 7 PM to midnight in most Indian cities). If your 4G router is rated for 150 Mbps but you're getting 30 Mbps, the issue is almost always placement or signal congestion, not the router.
When to consider external antennas
If you consistently see 1–2 signal bars, or if speeds are well below what your area should deliver, external antennas can help. A good directional antenna improves signal by 5–10 dB, which can roughly double effective speeds in weak-signal areas.
For outdoor mounting or rural installations, look at routers with built-in high-gain antennas like MikroTik's outdoor kits instead of adding separate antennas to an indoor router. They're built for exactly this scenario.
Position external antennas outside or in an unobstructed window. If you can find out where your nearest cell tower is (the OpenSignal app helps), point the antenna in that direction.
Common setup issues we see
No internet after SIM insert: Confirm mobile data is active on the SIM. Some new SIMs need a first call or SMS before data activates.
Slow speeds despite good signal: Check if you're on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 5 GHz. Connect to the 5 GHz band for faster local speeds. Also check if your data plan has a daily cap; once you hit it, speeds throttle.
Connection drops during rain: Cellular signal weakens in heavy rain, especially on higher frequency 5G bands. This is normal. The router will fall back to 4G automatically.
