TP-Link Archer AX12 Firmware 1.4.1 Adds Ethernet Backhaul: Everything you need to know

The TP-Link Archer AX12 can now build a wired EasyMesh network. Firmware version 1.4.1 (Build 20260410), published on TP-Link's download page on June 24, 2026, adds Ethernet backhaul support to the AX12 for the first time. If you own two or more AX12 routers and can run an Ethernet cable between them, they can now form a mesh network using that wired connection instead of relying on a wireless link between nodes.

Ethernet backhaul had been requested by Archer AX12 owners for several years on TP-Link's community forums, with moderators repeatedly indicating it would arrive in a future firmware update. Threads dating back to 2023 had users in Brazil, India, and Southeast Asia asking when the AX12 would get Ethernet backhaul, especially since the similarly specced Archer AX1500 already supported it. TP-Link's own community moderators had repeatedly responded with "please pay attention to future firmware updates" without giving a timeline. That wait is over - for some regions.

What firmware 1.4.1 actually adds?

According to the changelog on TP-Link's download center, the update includes four changes: EasyMesh Ethernet Backhaul support, EasyMesh in AP (Access Point) mode, Google Assistant integration, and Portal Authentication for the Guest Network.

The Ethernet backhaul piece is the headline feature. In previous firmware versions, two AX12 routers could form an EasyMesh network only over Wi-Fi. The problem with wireless backhaul on a dual-band router is that the link between nodes shares the same radio bands your devices use. On dual-band routers, the wireless link between mesh nodes shares airtime with client devices. Using Ethernet backhaul removes that traffic from the Wi-Fi radios, improving available wireless capacity and consistency.

EasyMesh in AP mode is the other significant addition. This means you can set the AX12 to Access Point mode behind an existing ISP router and still use EasyMesh features - seamless roaming, centralized management, and now wired backhaul - without needing the AX12 to handle routing duties. For Indian setups where the ISP provides a mandatory router (common with Jio Fiber and Airtel Xstream), this is particularly useful for users whose ISP requires its own gateway to remain connected, allowing the AX12 to extend Wi-Fi coverage while leaving routing to the ISP device.

Which AX12 variants can use it?

The firmware is published under the Archer AX12(EU)_V1 label on TP-Link's global download page. A TP-Link community moderator confirmed in the official EasyMesh backhaul thread that "the AX12 (US) can also use this version of the firmware." A follow-up firmware, version 1.5.0 (Build 20260605), was released on June 9, 2026 and focuses on security and stability improvements.

One important caveat: TP-Link's own download page warns that this upgrade is irreversible. You cannot downgrade to a previous firmware version after installing 1.4.1 or 1.5.0.

India availability is unconfirmed as of this writing. TP-Link India maintains a separate firmware download page for the AX12, and region-specific firmware may differ. If you bought your AX12 from an Indian retailer, check the TP-Link India support page or your router's web GUI for the update before attempting to install the EU/US firmware manually - cross-region firmware can void your warranty per TP-Link's own terms.

How to set up Ethernet backhaul after updating

Update both AX12 routers to firmware 1.4.1 or later. Factory-reset the satellite router (the second one). Connect the main router's LAN port to any Ethernet port on the satellite using a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. Once EasyMesh is configured, the routers should automatically switch to Ethernet backhaul when a compatible wired connection is detected. You can verify the connection type by logging into the main router's web interface and checking the EasyMesh page - an Ethernet icon next to the satellite confirms wired backhaul is active. If it still shows a wireless icon, check the cable and ensure both units are on 1.4.1 or newer.

If the Ethernet link is disconnected, EasyMesh automatically falls back to wireless backhaul and switches back to Ethernet when the cable is restored. Plug the cable back in, and it switches back to Ethernet - no manual intervention needed.

Who should care about this update?

If you already own one AX12 and your home has Ethernet runs between rooms, buying a second AX12 is now a legitimate alternative to a Deco mesh system. Two Archer AX12 routers connected with Ethernet backhaul offer Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, OFDMA and WPA3, whereas entry-level mesh systems such as the Deco E4 are limited to Wi-Fi 5 with Fast Ethernet ports. 

If your second AX12 connects only over Wi-Fi, the update still adds AP-mode EasyMesh, but the biggest performance gains come only when the routers are linked with Ethernet.
