TP-Link Archer AX12 vs Tenda AX12: Which Wi-Fi 6 router should you buy?

If your internet plan is above 200 Mbps and your budget allows, the Tenda AX12 gives you meaningfully more headroom. If you're on a 100–200 Mbps plan and value after-sales support and ecosystem compatibility, the TP-Link AX12 is the safer pick for the Indian market.

These two share nothing beyond the "AX12" label. The TP-Link Archer AX12 is an entry-level AX1500 router. The Tenda AX12 is a mid-range AX3000 router. The Tenda is the faster, more capable device - roughly double the maximum theoretical Wi-Fi bandwidth - and the comparison comes down to whether that speed difference justifies the price gap.

That's roughly double the wireless bandwidth on both bands for the Tenda, plus double the maximum channel width — paired with a phone or laptop that supports 160 MHz (many flagship devices released since 2021 do), you'll see noticeably faster local file transfers and higher peak wireless throughput on local network tasks.

The extra antennas and FEM amplifiers on the Tenda are worth a caveat, though: more antennas don't automatically mean better range, and actual coverage depends heavily on home layout more than antenna count alone.

How many devices can each router handle?

Specs sheets rarely translate directly to lived experience, so here's the practical version. The TP-Link AX12 stays comfortable with roughly 15–20 connected devices doing typical household things — phones, a smart TV, a couple of laptops, and a handful of smart-home gadgets. Push past that, especially with several devices active at once (video calls plus streaming plus downloads), and the single radio pair starts to show its limits.

The Tenda AX12's higher throughput and 160 MHz support let it absorb more simultaneous activity before you notice congestion — think 20–30 devices with several running data-heavy tasks concurrently.

Neither router is built for genuinely large or shared spaces with dozens of users. That becomes the domain of a mesh system.

Setup and everyday use

Both brands make first-time setup straightforward via their respective apps. TP-Link's Tether app and Tenda's Wi-Fi app have guided steps that don't require networking knowledge. Where they diverge is afterward: TP-Link's app is more actively maintained and more consistent about surfacing firmware update prompts. Tenda's app has thinner documentation and a smaller community to lean on if something goes sideways.

If you outgrow one router, what are the mesh expansion costs?

Both the TP-Link and Tenda AX12 are pitched as single-router solutions, but if your space turns out to be bigger than expected; with multiple floors, thick walls, a router stuck in a corner far from the bedrooms - you'll want to know the expansion path before you buy, not after.

TP-Link's route: The Archer AX12 supports OneMesh, so you add a compatible range extender rather than a second full router. Entry-level OneMesh extenders (like the RE215 or RE300) typically run somewhere in the ₹1,500–4,000 range, which keeps whole-home coverage relatively affordable. The extender talks to the router and hands devices off automatically, so you get one Wi-Fi name across your home instead of two separate networks to manage.

Tenda's route: Tenda's own mesh nodes (its Nova series) tend to be sold as multi-packs rather than single add-on units, which usually pushes the entry cost higher than TP-Link's one-extender approach — even though the initial AX12 router itself is priced close to the TP-Link. Tenda also supports EasyMesh (an open cross-brand standard) so in theory you're not locked into buying only Tenda gear for expansion.
