What is ONT in JioFiber?

ONT in JioFiber is the Optical Network Terminal, which is the internet box used at the customer's premises to connect the home to Jio's fibre network.

Jio's own documentation refers to the JioFiber ONT as the "internet box." Its JioFiber terms also define the Optical Network Terminal as part of the service equipment supplied for the connection.

The ONT sits at the customer end of the fibre connection. It receives the optical signal from the fibre network and provides the connectivity used by the home's networking equipment.

In JioFiber installations, the ONT can also provide Wi-Fi functionality depending on the equipment supplied. Jio documentation refers to the Jio Home Gateway/ONT and its Wi-Fi functionality.

This is why a JioFiber installation may appear to have a single box performing several jobs. The optical terminal handles the fibre connection, while the gateway can provide routing and wireless networking functions.

The term PON is also commonly associated with fibre broadband. PON stands for Passive Optical Network, which is the optical-access architecture used between the provider's network equipment and customer premises.

If you see PON and LOS lights on an optical terminal, they relate to the fibre connection rather than ordinary Wi-Fi.

The ONT is therefore different from a conventional DSL modem. It is designed for an optical fibre access network.

If you want to use your own Wi-Fi router with JioFiber, the correct configuration depends on the Jio equipment, service setup and router capabilities. You should check the current Jio and router documentation before changing network settings.

In simple terms, the ONT is the device that connects your home network to the fibre-optic broadband service provided by JioFiber.
